RE: winterizing - draining the hot water tank in a jayflight

Open your exterior access door to the water heater and remove the drain plug located at the bottom of tank. Make sure tank is not pressurized by releasing any built up pressure first.
how do i release the pressure - just open a hot water fawcet?

choke on generator?

i got a new honda 1000 generator. the instructions say to start the unit with the choke OFF then turn it ON when the unit warms up. is that right - it seems backwards to me. it also says dont USE the choke when the unit is warm or when it is hot outside. what does that mean - dont turn it on? with the honda, if i leave it off it eventually just stalls. is this normal - or do i have a lemon? of course, it is louder with the choke ON.

RE: honda 100 watt generator owners - will it...

to be clear - im talking about getting a portable intelligent battery charger (its 40/30/20/12/2 amps i think) and plugging it into the portable generator. im not using the trailer converter to charge the batts.

RE: honda 100 watt generator owners - will it...

Sorry sorry yes, I meant 1000 watts! The generator would only be used to charge the batteries, nothing else.
I just bought a cheaper 950 watt generator at canadian tire for $280. First, it took me about 50 pulls to get the thing started and I nearly passed out. Then when it was finally running, NO AC! It couldnt even power a cell phone charger! At that point I was still planning on exchanging it for another one, until I walked into the garage and it was sitting in a lake of gas, which I was cleaning up at midnight. Took it back to return it and they said its under warranty we'll fix it. You can imagine my response to that.
Now Ive learned my lesson - Im getting a Honda.

RE: charging batteries with honda 1000

The clamps can go right on the battery without disconnecting anything.
How about posting what exactly the charger is?
dont know yet, i havent bought it. im thinking some kind of smart or intelligent charger which charges in 3 stages. then i can use it to charge over the winter too (i understand the stock converter is not a very good way to charge batts).

RE: charging batteries with honda 1000

A 1000 watt generator will only produce at most 3.5 amps 12VDC I would suggest getting a quality battery charger and plug that into the generator and then directly to the batteries. Will get a much higher rate of charge.
Thanks - this is what I was thinking too. When Im hooking up the clamps from the charger to the batteries, do I need to unplug the batts from the trailer, or can I just hook the charger up on top of the other connectors?

charging batteries with honda 1000

how long would it take to fully charge 2 6 volts (at 1/2 charge) with a honda 1000 watt generator? what amp level should you use on your deep cycle charger? (ie charger plugged into the generator)

15 amps enough to run home ent system???

I plugged the trailer into the house yesterday to charge the batteries with a 50’ 15 amp cord. I have a 20” flat TV screen TV and a DVD/home entertainment system with 5.1 surround. The DVD/home entertainment system kept shutting down. No appliances were on, just one light. Do I have a bum DVD player or is it possible that running the TV/DVD, converter, and a light is more than 15 amps? Seems a bit of a surprise to me. Is that the type of thing that would blow a fuse, or just shut down one of the power draws (in this case the DVD)?

how much can i plug into my inverter?

ive got a 400 watt inverter and a cig plug in the trailer rated to 8 amps. does that mean i can plug in a max of 8*120=960 watts? or is it 8*12=96 watts? or is it something completely different?

why wont my tv work with the inverter?

got a new trailer with a 20" flat screen, I believe its about 60 watts. also got a 200 watt inverter, which i plug into the 12 volt cig lighter installed by the TV (for the TV). the TV wont turn on and the inverter indicates a low voltage situation. wierd because the batts havent really been used. i get a multimeter and the batteries (2 six volts) read 12.37 volts which I believe indicates a 70% charge. so whats wrong?

I have no idea of the make of the converter, or even where it is located. Its a new 2008 Jayco 22BH trailer - any ideas?

battery charging questions

Can I plug my shore power cable (with adapter) into an extension cable from the house to charge the batteries? Is the power from the house 30 amp, 15 amp, or what? And will it be OK for my trailer? How long does it take to charge 2 six volts this way?
Also, I was looking at a Honda 1000 watt generator to charge the batteries. However it says it cannot be used to charge deep cycle batts, but you can plug a battery charger into it. Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced batt charger for this? Also, I have 2 six volts in parallel (?), do I just clip the red charger clip to the pos terminal on one of the batts and the black clip to the neg terminal on the other? Or do I have to charge the batts separately? How long does it take to charge them this way?
Orr - - do I just my shore power cable into the gen and it charges the batts that way?
I have no idea how the layman figured out how to operate an RV before the internet!

RE: inverter question

OK it turns out that there is a cig lighter recepticle built into the trailer beside the TV. However - its too small for the plug that came with my inverter. what the easiest fix here. can i buy any old plug (thats the right size) and attach that to the inverter?

RE: inverter question

ah! this concept just hit me (light goes on). thats the way to do it isnt it - plug your shore power cable from the trailer into the inverter, which is attached to the batteries, so no need for an extension cord coming through the window. and this will power all of the AC outlets in the trailer (up to the maximum wattage of the inverter)? and if you go over that wattage the fuses in the inverter will blow.
what happens if you dont turn off the converter? and how do you turn off the converter?
do you need some sort of adapter to plug the shore power chord into the inverter? (sorry im very new at this and not looking at the trailer at the moment).

RE: inverter question

You have to find a place for installing at and wiring it with fat enough wire and a matching fuse size for your application (watts amount, amps amount) as part of your renovations
please bear with me here - i dont have to worry about this step if im just hooking the thing to my battery terminals and running an extension chord through the window right? im certainly no electrician.

RE: inverter question

OK
1. I have 2 6 volts - so what terminals should I put the clamps on?
2. Should I mount the inverter somewhere near the batteries and have it permanently connected to the batteries, or should I just keep it in the trailer and clamp it to the batteries when I need it?\
3. How do I install a cig lighter recepticle if I dont have one in the trailer?
